Linderhof Palace

Palacio de Linderhof

Palacio de Linderhof

Linderhof Palace (Linderhof 12, Ettal) – located in southwest Bavaria (1 hour’s drive southwest of Munich), this is the smallest of the three palaces that King Ludwig II of Bavaria built in the 1860s. Ludwig II was inspired by the Versailles palace in France, as evidenced by the interior designed of many of the palace’s quarters. The land this palace was built in was originally the hunting grounds of Ludwig’s father (Maximilian II).

Surrounding the palace are imitation baroque gardens and terraces and cascades in the Italian Renaissance style. The adjoining landscape garden continues into the mountain forest of the Ammergau Mountains. Ludwig II introduced architectural features into the park based on the world of the Orient, such as the Moorish Kiosk and the Moroccan House, and on scenes from Wagner’s music dramas such as the Venus Grotto, Hunding’s Hut and the Hermitage of Gurnemanz. Admission: €8.50 (regular). Hours: 9 am – 6 pm (April – October 15), 10 am – 4 pm (October 16 – March).
