Altes Museum (Museumsinsel, Lustgarten, Berlin Mitte) – this is another museum located on Berlin’s Museum Island. Built during the 1820s, Altes is one of the foremost examples of classical architecture. Its permanent exhibition, titled “New Antiquity in the Old Museum” (collection of classical antiquities and gold treasury) showcases Greek and Roman art and sculptures. The main floor shows stone sculptures, clay and bronze figures, friezes, vases, gold jewelry and precious silverware from Greek antiquity. Roman art is represented by portraits of Caesar and Cleopatra, sarcophagi, mosaics, frescos and Roman-Egyptian mummy portraits. Admission: €10 (general). Free for children up to 18 years. Hours 10 am – 6 pm (Friday – Wednesday), 10 am – 8 pm (Thursday).
